History of Women’s Trousers

Created by the Chinese to ride, pants long remained the preserve of men. If there was already a symbol of the revolutionaries, the pants also became the symbol of women’s emancipation. More than a daily clothing, the pants has long played a role in history.

Rider clothing to the everyday

If it is known that some Neolithic men were already wearing what looked like leggings 3200 years before Christ, the first trousers with a crotch comes from ancient China. Designed to mount, the oldest discovered to pants days are dated between the thirteenth and tenth century BC

In the rest of the ancient world, the appearance of the trousers is also linked to the domestication of the horse. All ancient civilizations, except the Greeks and Romans, wear trousers. If the Romans saw in the pants barbaric symbol, they eventually certify the utility. The army adopts followed by civil society in the third century.

This is the sixteenth century that the pants really made its appearance in Europe. In the Middle Ages, men wore breeches, leggings kinds of attachments in the back. The evolution of fashion then brought seamstresses invented the fly, giving rise to the pants we know today.

During the Revolution, the pants became a political symbol. In 1788, the pants workers call themselves the “sans culottes” as opposed to the nobility which, by way of worries, wears pants.
The pants becomes an indispensable locker room in 1830 alone, especially in England, where he soon down most common man.
the story of pants for men then declines by models and cuts, each symbol of an era and a way, today emblems of trends and styles.

The trousers of female emancipation symbol

It is not possible to evoke the history of the pants not to mention his role in the emancipation of women.

If the Persian women were already wearing the pants, this garment was a long time reserved for the male sex. During the French Revolution, a law requires women wear pants wishing to register with the police. Trousers for women is tolerated for those doing a man’s job.

It is ultimately the sport that will allow women to wear pants. The aviators and cyclists show in trousers in public, often causing bad media coverage. In 1930, three actresses Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo and Katharine Hepburn Hollywood shocked all by regularly wearing pants and even tuxedo, thus starting the democratization of trousers for women. A post-war, it is socially acceptable for women to wear trousers for leisure or gardening activities. In 1960, the couturier Yves Saint Laurent finally ratifies the dictatorship of the skirt in Europe, making the pants for woman truly a fashion garment that all snapped.

Yet even today some countries prohibit the wearing of trousers for women. In Sudan, for example, a woman in pants is punished by forty lashes.
The history of the pants is often a symbol, it is still one of the most worn clothes. The modes revisit every year for all to enjoy.

Long live the pants!
